Duncan used a new burner phone to make the call at three in the afternoon. He dialed, listened to the female-sounding machine voice, and then punched in the five-digit extension and waited. He knew that the wait at this hour might be a long time, because it was the part of the afternoon when important people had meetings or worked at things that required intense concentration.
He set the phone on speaker, plugged in the charger, set it down on the hotel roomâs table, and then returned his attention to the pictures and notations he had printed in the business center downstairs. He had already copied the photographs and videos he had taken on his phones to the laptop and then thumb drives, so the US Attorney could send them to whomever she pleased, but the paper copies of things were what he was counting on. She, or her deputies, wouldnât be going to court with any of this stuff. Probably all of it would have to be verified, and much of it duplicated, by the FBI investigation before charges were filed. But the text and pictures he had produced, together with the reports of the Indiana State Police and the Parkmanâs Elbow PD, made an impressive display. The physical murder book would be much harder to ignore than the digital version.
The phone on the table said, âYouâve reached me. Identify yourself.â
âHello,â Duncan said. âItâs me.â
âIâm surprised to hear from you during business hours.â
âSorry. I know how busy you must be, but I need to give you the information Iâve got. Iâll hand it over any time thatâs convenient for you. Iâm in Chicago right now, and I can be at your office in fifteen minutes.â
âIâve told you what Iâll need. If youâve got it, send it to me. Iâll have my assistant give you an email address that was set up just for this purpose, and sheâll shut it down afterward.â
âSome of it is in digital form, but much of it isnât. Iâll need to deliver it in person. You can do what you want with it after youâve seen it. I think youâre going to want to hand it over to the FBI to get them going, but thatâs your decision.â
âYes, it is. You sound as though you feel your investigation is finished, and youâve reached a conclusion.â
âMy conclusion is still what I told you before. Yes, there is a group, made up mostly of small-time professional criminals, recruited and hired to move into the small towns along the Ash River in Indiana and try to build themselves into a crime syndicate. Theyâve started with extortion because it brings in steady money and gives them a chance to scare the populace.â
âAnd you have enough evidence and enough information so I could go into a courtroom and convict some people.â
âIn my opinion, you will when you have what Iâm going to give you. I have names and photographs of both living members and dead ones. Iâve traced and documented their
